Higgenbotham Book Review :: American History, American Identity

Don Higginbotham expertly combines both primary and secondary sources providing the endorser a composite historical autobiography of the American Revolution as seen through Americanideas. Higginbotham was Dowd Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hilluntil his death in June 2008. Higginbotham contri anded several articles on comparativerevolution and many other books and articles about the American Revolution. The books subtitle is Military Attitudes, Policies, and Practice 1763 1789. However,Higginbotham devotes substantial attention to other themes providing the reader with asynthesized version of the political and military aspects of the war. He also addresses the culturaland social aspects of the war. In doing so, he illustrates how the war affected the development ofan American individualism and how whig philosophy translated into everyday reality for the commonman. Finally, he uses the book to compare the Vietnam conflict to the American Revolution. The auth or never directly discusses the development of an American identity, but one cansee that thread as he discusses the militia system and its reinforcement of the provincialism andlocalism during the period (7). Higginbotham continues this theme, contending that a group ofAmerican political leaders emerged within the Continental Congress who were nationalists anddesired to go beyond the simple provincial assemblies (81). Higginbotham maintains this design, proposing that Manifest Destiny may have been an upshot as early as 1776 in the colonialdiscussions concerning the invasion of Canada (108). The concept of an American identity cameto fruition in 1776 when opinion concerning independence grew increasingly roaring (117).One could argue, however, that most Americans possessed little concept of an identity even afterthe Declaration was signed. Nevertheless, in 1781 the Pennsylvania line must had some conceptof an American identity. After revolting due to lack of pay and other necessar y items, onesoldier remarked that, Clinton might bribe such a think toadeater as Arnold, but it is not inhis power to bribe an American soldier (404). Without an innate knowledge of what anAmerican soldier was, it seems unlikely that such a remark would have been made.Higginbotham clearly demonstrates how colonial Americans internalized whig beliefsand turned them into action not only resisting British authority, but also resisting its ownContinental Army. This created somewhat of a quandary for colonial authorities throughout thewar, for in resisting the militarism of George III (118), they needed to establish a military thatbecame what they were fighting against. Higginbotham describes Congress first attempt at thisin a restrained military code that would reflect the society from which it originated.

The Fight for Womens Rights After the Vote was Gained Essay example --

The Fight for Womens Rights After the Vote was GainedBy 1925, both feminist socialists and equal rights feminists believed they had won their battles for womens rights be stool they had gained the vote. Considering developments in the 20th century, how justified were those beliefs? Winning the vote for women was exclusively the beginning, so those who thought that was the end of the fight had a big surprise coming. The vote was to be for women an instrument to achieve equality. In order for this to happen women had to lodge together and only voted for candidates that would work on some of their demands. Even though, it was legal for women to vote, it was still not socially acceptable, so most women who did where considered social outcasts. Due to this completed position, a great deal of women chose not to vote, and most of those who did vote, did so the same way their husbands or fathers did. Because of that, women as a group where nothing to fear, since they would not cause a shift in the polls, so political candidates ignored womens demands. This fact proved that the fight...

Harrison Ainsworth Rookwood :: essays research papers

In the early nineteenth century, an interest in criminals and the common highwaymanarose in Europe. Many magazines in London, such as Bentley&8217s Miscellany, Fraser&8217sMagazine, and The Athenaeum featured sections that were reserved for stories abouthighwayman and their numerous adventures. The growing interest in the subject inspiredmany authors to write about the various exploits of popular criminals and highwayman. Some prominent examples of this type of novel were Edward Bulwer&8217s Paul Clifford(1830) and Eugene Aram (1832) Charles Dickens&8217 Oliver rick (1838-39) and BarnabyRudge (1841) and William Harrison Ainsworth Rookwood (1834) and Jack Sheppard(1839-40). Several of these novels were based upon famous crimes and criminal careersof the past (Eugene Aram, Dick Turpin in Rookwood, and Jack Sheppard) others derivedfrom contemporary crime (Altick, 1970, p. 72). Although many authors chose to basetheir stories on criminals, William Harrison Ainsworth&8217s Rookwood and Jack Sheppardare two of the best examples of the theme of &8216crime and punishment&8217 in the nineteenthcentury.Ainsworth started his writing career as a writer of gothic stories for variousmagazines. Gothic elements are included in Ainsworth&8217s novel the ancient hall, thefamily vaults, macabre burial vaults, secret marriage, and so forth (John, 1998, p. 30). Rookwood is a romance about two half-brothers in a conflict over the family inheritance. The English criminal who Ainsworth decides to entangle in Rookwood was Dick Turpin,a highwayman executed in 1739. However, echoing Bulwer, Ainsworth&8217s explanation forhis interest in Dick Turpin (like Bulwer&8217s explanation in his choice of Eugene Aram as asubject) is personal and familial (John, 1998, p. 31). though the basis of the novels seemsimilar, Ainsworth treated Dick Turpin in a different way than Bulwer treated EugeneAram. Ainsworth romanticizes history, however basically sticks to the facts (as far as he knewthem). maybe more importantly, Ainsworth does not pretend that the Turpin he inventsis the real Dick Turpin, nor does he attempt to elevate Turpin&8217s social class status (John,1998, p. 32). Ainsworth recalls lying in bed listening to the exploits of &8216Dauntless Dick&8217,as narrated by his father. Despite Ainsworth&8217s infatuation with the criminal, the realTurpin was no more interesting a genius than an ordinary cat burglar. Besideshighway robbery, his affairs included stealing sheep and breaking into farmer&8217 houses, sometimes with the aid of confederates and he took a turn at smuggling (Hollingsworth,1963, p. 99). Although Turpin appears in a considerable part of the novel, he really hasno effect on the plot. He stole a marriage certificate, but the incident was not important

War as Transformation Essay -- Warfare Violence Essays

War as Transformation Many people look for reason in strugglefare. The reasons humans decide to kill each other are varied. Many wars start over land, difference of religion and culture, or economic stress. While thither have been many wars over the years that man has inhabited this planet, World War I sticks out because of one incident that took place during the war.On celestial latitude 25th, 1916 the Waring factions took essentially a Christmas meliorate from their fighting, and went into enemy territory. They shared food and drink, and exchanged pictures of loved ones. They laughed and sang and tried to cross language barriers that the day before seemed insurmountable. The hobby day, they returned to their trenches, reinstated the boundaries of the war and began to fight anew. Even to this day, war is sometimes suspended for religious reasons, and no one finds this absurd or shocking. Recently, many Serbians were mad at electric chair Clinton because he did not suspend bombin g of Croatia during a holiday. As if war has a scheduled time and place. World War 1 was significant to this nose candy because it was a war that involved peoples from practically every continent for the first time in history. It is ironic to think that the destructive force of war was something that , in a sense, brought many peoples of the world together for a common cause whether it was the Allied cause, or the German or Russian cause. Looking at this war as an example of most wars, the causes of warfare stem from some sort of disagreement. Many of these disagreements derive from human insecurities about change. Fear of change drives people to construct tighter to their traditions and customs. When change is slow and progressive people may mutter under their breath, di... ...rks successfully. That is why people are so dependent on it. It is much easier to break someones spirit with brute force than to use intellect and reason. War as a transformation process will continue unle ss people see that the alike(p) evolutionary processes of change in society can be implemented with negotiation. But these types of processes are slow and involve a willingness to be absolved to change. People have to get the idea in their head that change is inevitable, it is what life is based on. The status quo can not remain forever. It is only through this realization and openness to new ideas that war as a machine of progress can ever be stopped . Skilled leaders call for to motivate people to negotiation, and to acting without aggression. To lose the us against them mentality should be the ultimate goal of all societies and peoples. Every day should be Christmas.

Century In Canada

Nations are born out of conflict, and grow and thrive by learning from their mistakes. The 20th century in Canada was responsible for an abundance of huge aspects that now exist in our country. Within that era the rights of wo hands were recognized and altered, resulting in them being considered equals to men. Our army became recognized as an elite fighting force. Nipponese Canadian internment camps were put in place as a result of the bombing of Pearl Harbor displayed nothing less then an unjust act.All wind up to the passing of the Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms making certain that inhumane acts that have happened in our past will not happen again. After all, those who do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat it. The early years of the 21st century were important to shaping Canada as a nation. 2 major(ip) events occurred during this sequence that serveed to create our identity the feminist movement began to take hold within and beyond our borders, as go od as beginning to be recognized as a world-class military force.Women (prior to the famous five) were tremendously discriminated against and viewed as incapable of doing many acts. Emily tater, a self-taught legal expert, who championed in women and childrens rights felt strongly in fighting for gender equality. In 1903 she began a campaign focusing on property rights of married women. With her hard run away and dedication in 1911 the Dower move was passed. The act stated that women had the right to one third of their husbands property and allowed for the surviving spouse to become the legal owner of the home. This signified a huge maltreat for women because it proved there rights were beginning to be recognized and there was hope for one day being considered equals to men. Her career continued to progress when she along with some other concerned women attended a trial for Edmonton prostitutes on October 17, 1933. The women were ordered to leave the court because the case was n ot to be viewed by mixed company. Murphy was feral and proposed that if women werent allowed to view the case there should be a separate court for women, run by women.Emily later went on to become a Judge, Just resembling the timess of male lawyers/Judges in her family. Emily had to cope with the hurtful remarks from male lawyers doubting how she can be a Judge, and therefore be granted powers o drop important/ valuable decisions, if she is not even considered a person. The law essentially categorized women as crazy, unstable lunatics and not considered a person. This got her fuming, fighting until there was Justice. Murphy gathered up 4 other women with the same political views as her, and together they made up the famous five.Emily, Henrietta Ed wards, Irene Parlay, Louise McKinney and Nellie McClure were all strong willed women coming from well educated patronizegrounds and were devoted to social change and women suffrage. With the support of the female citizens they produc ed a asking and brought it to the Supreme Court. After a nail biting 5 weeks of debates the petition was denied. The women however were not discouraged and delivered the petition to Britain Privy Council, the highest role of g everywherenment in Canada. On October 18, 1929 the Privy Council announces the Persons Case, explaining that women were legally considered persons and therefore could become members of the Senate of Canada. There is no question about it this milestone was the first of many for Canadian women, and because of the efforts of the Famous Fives women would now be considered equals to their male counter move. The women of today owe a tremendous amount of gratitude for their efforts. field War I lasted from July of 1914 to November of 1918. During this time Canadians began to build an identity for themselves. This is evident during the battle of Vim Ridge. Canadian troops were ordered by Britain to conquer Vim Ridge, a prime piece of land that would be critical to the allies efforts. Unfortunately the Germans had control over it, but Canadian troops lead by General smasher and General Currie were going to set out to conquer the ridge. Prior to the planned invasion the Canadian troops had to undergo weeks of exhausting practice drills, as it was crucial o stay undetected and surprise the foeman and that everything was executed perfectly, or the whole mission would be Jeopardized.Canadian aircrafts flew overhead the ridge and photographed what the ridge looked like. Returning back to Canadian grounds with information in hand this allowed for Canadian forces to set up an exact replica of what to expect during the attack in terms of characteristics of the ridge, and where the Germans were stand up guard. Troops trained for weeks on the recreated Vim Ridge set, until they knew it so well they could perform their duties blindfolded. The Canadian forces had also set in place 2 techniques that would help them take over the ridge after they emerged f rom the tunnels being built to get as close as they can. They then would execute the creeping barrage and energy glide. The strategy consisted of making a smoke screen in front of them (produced by bombs) and crawling low to the ground, placing them beyond enemy lines. This allowed for the forces, when they were ready to attack, to take the enemy by surprise and hopefully conquer. On April 9, 1917 all 4 divisions of Canadas troops attacked, he plan was executed exactly as planned and the Canadians conquered the ridge. However, this battle was a tragic one as Canada was faced with heavy casualties, resulting in 3600 soldiers killed. The victory for Canada resulted in a nation and its armed forces being recognized for their brave men as well as smart planning and execution. Because of Vim Ridge we began to be a nation worth fearing. After the horror of the First instauration War and the tremendous achievement for womens rights, Canada was a nation well on its way to great success. Tho ugh the war was devastating, we ultimately came out of it stronger. Moving into the asss women roles were go along to evolve. The flapper girl age was beginning. What brought upon this revolution was the fact that during the war women had to disobey societies views on what a women should and should not do by metreping up and performing the boys jobs while they were onward serving in the war. They had to remove their aprons, and leave the stove. This was a time they unavoidable to step up and take over their husbands jobs in order to still permit for their family and be able to put dinner on the table. Once the war had ended women were not going to return back to their old roles. Women didnt want, and didnt feel like, they needed to succumb to society. They were comfortable in their new lives, though it was only intended to be temporary. This new wave of young women wanted to stand out and be different. All of these factors birthed the flapper girl. She appeared as a boy, dressed with short hair, higher skirts, and flattened chests. They had a strong appearance and attitude about them they felt liberated. The younger generation saw the time frame as a perfect opportunity to introduce this new style, given that womens rights were evolving, this would bring more attention onto them. It was overall a rebellious movement of expectations of women. (http//history sass. About. Mom/odd/sass/a/flappers. HTML) After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941 Canada took a step backwards on human rights and discrimination against the Japanese. At the time there were 22,000 Japanese Canadians living in British Columbia, some of whams ancestors were the first immigrants coming for work to Canada in the sass. Though they had always been discriminated against by the largely white Canadian society, it was nothing compared to what was about to come. Days after the Pearl Harbor attack, Canadian companies began to elicit all Japanese workers beginning with the Canadian Pacific Railways.Matters got worse when Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong and killed over 2000 Canadian soldiers stationed there for training. The Japanese began to be referred to as SAPS, and signs were being affix around the province harshly stating, Keep out. It was then the Federal Government designated a 100-mile wide strip, as a protected area to commemorate all Japanese until they would be further placed inland. They were finally ordered to pack a small suitcase and live in inverted over animal stalls awaiting their train to arrive. (http//www. CB. Ca/history/ OPPOSITENESS EPOCH APPEAL. HTML). Husbands, wives and children were all separated. The men were sent to work on road gangs, whereas the women and children were sent to shantytowns in the B. C wilderness. In January of 1943 the government forced the sale of all property/ belonging to the Japanese Canadians that includes their homes, cars and other valuables. The reasoning behind this was to erase any mem ories the Japanese built in Canada and to convince them not to assume living here when the war over. The writing was essentially on the walls, the Japanese were no longer welcome.Once the war ended the B. C federal government decided to release all Japanese from the camps. The Japanese were then faced with choosing between deportations back to Japan, specifically parts that were destroyed during the war, or moving east into the Rocky Mountains. The majority of them chose to move to Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies. Many families did move back to Japan as well. It was a long time coming, but finally on April 1st, 1949 after much protest, Japanese Canadians were finally allowed the freedom to live anywhere in Canada.

Primary School classroom Essay

These Poets write Honestly nearly their Experiences. Explore the Memories Expressed in their Poems and consider what Views they atomic number 18 sharing about Growing Upcarol Ann Duffy expresses her views and gives her true experiences to do with childhood and growing up. She uses a range of techniques in her poems, like similes to emphasize her feelings and emotions and imagery, where she uses metaphors to assistance create the picture and mood of the atmosphere of each poem. For example, the Primary School classroom.Simon Armitage also writes about everyday experiences, childhood, growing up, changes and regrets. He uses less imagery than Carol Ann Duffy, solely in one particular poem Kid, he uses a great more rhyme. They both include experiences towards school life, where Carol Ann Duffy writes about the younger years and Simon Armitage writes about the older years at school. These two poets are similar in some ways, but can be sooner different in others. For example, in Duffy s Stealing it shares the feelings of a child who steals for no reason and Duffy adds comments from her own experiences. It can make the reader feel quite depressed and sad, whereas in I am very Bothered by Simon Armitage, it is again about a child with regret for something he did at school, but instead of being sad it uses black humour and is more horrible stench of branded skinIn Mrs Tilschers Class, Carol Ann Duffy starts with you, which makes it individualised and sets the scene travel up the Blue Nile. She identifies things like Primary School aspects very well with your finger, tracing the route This is a good reminder to what children do when they are little. She creates the picture of the blackboard chalky Pyramids rubbed into dust. This suggests break time and the laugh of a bell swung by a running child creates a jolly, happy time that all the kids look forward to.This gives a comparison between home and school. This was better than home. There are more enkindle things to be found at school, like enthralling books, which is obviously what she doesnt have at home. She uses similes to describe the classroom. The classroom glowed like a sweet memory board. This creates the idea of colour that a sweet shop would have. She tells of a negative memory Brady and Hindley, which faded, like the faint, uneasy smudge of a mistake. School has so many good memories that it is able to make the bad ones disappear. She uses emotion Mrs Tilscher loved you, and alliteration good gold star, which makes the poem flow easier. It also sounds a bit like a childs expression.A xylophones nonsense gives the impression of tuneless playing, which kids do in Primary School, they beart care about accuracy, just about having fun. It also appeals to the senses by using sounds as well as visual images.

Alison Cazer was olfactory modalitying go into out of the closet of the window thinking about the day ahead. Alison was a fashion designer and had her accept business in London. She heard a noise and turned round to see her friend Lucy waiting in her office. Alison was so excited to see her she wanted to tell her about all the smart things that had been planned for her today. She told Lucy about the good advanceds the meeting with Jacques Lording the owner of Elicit a local rival company. I cant believe he rang me and asked to know to a greater extent information about my products Im astounded.I mean why would he want to know more about my products, maybe he is thinking to merge with me. That would be brilliant because then together we would be bigger than Chars and hopefully that would put them out of business. Alison was passage to meet Jacques in a large Victorian provide in a little village called Axton. It was a little different than she expected just he said it was because he wanted a dim meeting with no press watching their backs. Phil Cichloid was the assassin. He was a butler at the nearby Victorian house though this was just a handle up and had been given a contract by the director of a Chars. The plan was to kill Alison so then there will be no rival company for Chars to compete with because Alison put all the m geniusy in to the business, therefore Chars would make much more money. The director of Chars had been given a decimal point off about the merger and had to take action, the solitary(prenominal) direction to do this was to kill Alison. It was the assassins first killing but he still remained calm and truly professional. The assassin was told to stone pit Alison because she owned a rival business and was too thought of as rich and selfish by lots of jealous wad as well as the director of chars. The assassin knew the time and location of when he was going to strike as he was told by the director who knew everything. The dire ctor was definitely right in one sense yes she was rich, but not at all selfish. In fact she was totally opposite. She was a railroad caring, bubbly, and down to existence girl. The house at which Alison was going to meet the manager was quite posh.Though from the out align it looked very dull and isolated this was on purpose, it is so nobody redden thought the meeting would take place in a scruffy house therefore no press would be there. The bricks were grey and the windows black with dust. It was fall outside the ivy on the wall made anyone who came near the house feel trapped and lonely but inside it was totally opposite. It was bright and warm. in that location was a barn besides the house. The debris of brick from the barn made the field besides the house look like a graveyard. The assassin was lying first behind the house on a hill, known to the locals as death hill because it was so steep you could hardly walk up it and anybody who got to the top would be almost dead. T he assassin knew she would be surrounded by bodyguards, which is why he got so high up on the top of death hill. He also knew the boss of elicit would arrive soon after Alison so he had to be quick. Nobody could see the assassin but he could see his target perfectly well. He got into his position on the top of the hill he heard a car behind him.His rifle was a 1987pg with a place of 100m plenty far enough to reach Alison. He lifted his rifle in wait of the car coming up the drive, with excitement rushing or so his body he was disappointed when the car carried on straight down the lane. The assassin again heard a car this time he new it was Alison he could tell, you could see the 2 rings on her left hand reflecting the light and also the car had another 2 people in, he could only guess these were the bodyguards. He got his rifle ready and was now ready to strike.Alison turned up the drive and started driving up the long, winding, dislodged driveway. She heard a scrape she got out of the car and saw a massive scratch on the back of her Lotus Elise. She was thinking about turning around- how could the boss of elicit see her car in such a state the only thing that changed her mind was the thought of been late for the boss, that was the cash in ones chips thing she wanted to do so she opinionated to carry on down the lane. The assassin at this stage was very calm, as though he was doing this as an honour. He was getting a eccentric frustrated, as this job was taking longer than expected and wanted to get onto his next job. He could see Alison coming now and got into his final position. She thought she had come to the wrong place, she had expected something more like Buckingham Palace, she knew there was something wrong but she carried on down the lane. She was about to turn the car around when her bodyguards saw a light coming from inside the house, somebody must be in she thought and went to investigate with the help of the bodyguards. She got out of the car a nd was just about to bash on the door when she remembered something she had forgot to lock the door. How stupid of me she thought, why didnt I lock it in the first place. Alison locked the car door and looked around astounded at the bluntness of the house and its surroundings did the boss really want to meet her here? It started raining heavy so she put her hood up, this blocked her view of what was going on around her.Her bodyguards noticed something in the bush to the side of her and left her on her own while they went to investigate. She was just about to knock on the door. onward she could hear it she had already felt it, right through her stomach. She tried to scream but no sound would come out of her mouth. She tried to get her wandering but she couldnt move. She felt helpless and knew secretly that her world was coming to an end. The bodyguards rushed to her but knew there was nothing they could do, one went to get help and the other was difficult to comfort her. There was no signal on her mobile phone and they couldnt get in the house. She grabbed her stomach in hope that in some miracle way it may stop the bleeding and she may have a chance to survive even though she knew she had no chance. Her trousers were wet with blood she didnt dare look down frightened at what she may see. She was finding it hard to breath now, she tried to look around to see who had done this terrible thing to her but she couldnt see more than a metre. She dropped to the ground, the bodyguard tried to help her but there was nothing he could do, the pain was unbearable now she knew she had to fight the pain or lose everything she had, her wonderful family and friends. She again tried to move but the pain was holding her back like some sort of barrier. She started to feel dizzy, she took one last look at her hand and fell to the ground with the rain pouring on her and blood slowly surrounding her body as the bodyguard went in search of the person who had done this. The assassin smirked, he moved quickly packing his things together as fast as he could. He ran to the car making sure he destroyed every bit of evidence he had made. He was unruffled, calm, cold and motionless. His car was on the other side of the hill so nobody noticed he was there, he made sure that he had got everything and set off down the drive. He took one last look behind him to check that Alison was dead and that his job had been done properly and made his way to his next job leaving Alison to die in her own pool of blood.

Succubus Shadows Chapter 13

I woke up next to solidification, and for the space of heartbeat, I thought I truly was waking waking up from an awful, awful dream ab extinct the Oneroi and everything else that had happened since Seth and I had broken up. He lay asleep in fill let on with the sheets tangled around him, his light brown hair glinting reddish in the morning sun. He slept only in boxers, and his chest looked potent and as yet-tempered and perfect for cuddling against. His breathing was level, his posture still and relaxed. I drank it only in, in all the little Seth details Id been missing for months. I swore that I could even smell him. Did dreams drive home smells? This one did, I was genuine. That soft woodsy-apple scent wrapped around me like an embrace. afterward a few moments, he began to stir and sleepily open his eyes. He squinted at the light and rolled onto his back, stifling a yawn. I wanted to roll right everywhere to him and snuggle against his warmth, telling him all about the nightmares Id been having. then, I real numberized there was no expression I could go to him. I couldnt move. Well, that wasnt exactly true. in that respect was more to it than that. I just didnt convey a body. I was an observer only, like the invisible camera Id been with Roman and Jerome. This apparently was non a dream I was active in, and the realization of that brood home the terrible truth this was still an Oneroi dream. I hadnt imagined them. I hadnt imagined Seth and me breaking up.He sat up in bed and rubbed his eyes. It was such a familiar, nostalgic sight. Getting up was al miens hard for him, largely because of the bizarre writing hours he kept. He glanced over at the clock, which was near the direction from which I was watching. His eyes passed right over where I would have been. Yes. I was just a ghost in this. But what was this exactly? Truth or craft? The time on the clock nine in the morning must have been motivation enough for him to drag himself out of be d. Still in boxers, he stumbled into the bathroom, miraculously not walking into anything in his sleepy state. While brushing his teeth, he noticed a note on the counter. I immediately recognized the writing because I saw it all the time at the bookstore.Went in early today to dumbfound a few things through and should be done by six. Bring Brandy by, if you can, to try on those shoes.Love,MaddieSeeing Maddies name jolted me out of the Seth Fantasyland Id been living in as he went through his morning routine. Expanding my vision now, I saw changes to his bathroom things that hadnt been there when wed dated. Another toothbrush, for one thing. Makeup in the corner. A pink robe on the bathroom hook. On the books, Maddie was still sharing a place with Doug, only when we all knew what the reality was. That pain that hadnt in reality leftfield since my last dream grew tighter within my chest. She was all over this place. She had left her mark everywhere, everywhere in this space he a nd I had once shared together. I had been replaced.Seth went through the rest of his routine, including a unco fast shower. He was notorious for staying in there forever while plotting around story line. I tried hard not to focus on the sight of him naked and wet and instead pondered where he might be qualifying today. If it was just to write at the bookstore, he wouldnt have been moving so briskly. He easily found clean boxers and jeans, yet the hardest part of his day came next what T-shirt to transgress? When wed been together, Id loved watching this. Id lie in bed after all, I had no urgency to ever get ready laughing while he deliberated and deliberated over his massive T-shirt collection. each(prenominal) had its own hanger, displaying some bit of retro or pop culture novelty. Vanilla Ice. ALF. Mr. T cereal. He flipped through them all, studying each one conservatively as his hand touched each sleeve. Then, his fingers on the spur of the moment brushed against a sleeve long than the others. His closet wasnt all T-shirts. There were a few sweaters and pullovers crammed into the sides. There was also a flannel shirt it was what hed stopped and noticed. Pushing the other shirts aside, he took the flannel off of its hanger and held it up, his motions almost reverent.Even without physical form, I had the brilliance of my heart going still. I knew this shirt. It was one hed given me to wear a long time ago, the night Id passed out at his place from too lots alcohol. Id met his family the next day, looking ridiculous with the flannel over my strappy party dress. Even while dating, Id totally forgotten all about that shirt. He held it there betwixt his detainment, and the look on his facethere was so much there, I didnt even know where to start. Seth was so good at watching his flavor neutral and could be extremely short-spoken when he chose. But here, alone, he was unguarded. There was sorrow on his face. Sorrow and regret. And when he held the shir t up and rested his sharpen on it, I saw longing as well. The whole mood was rounded out with a sort of helpless resignation. He inhaled deeply and then hung the shirt back up. As he did, I caught the faintest whiff of tuberose blossoms the leftover scent of my Michael Kors perfume. Seth had never worn or washed it again, I realized with a start. Hed just kept it like some sort of treasured arti particular. After that, he simply grabbed the first T-shirt his hand came across, without even looking. It was an old favorite of his, showing the Tasmanian Devil from Looney Tunes. Seths mood had shifted considerably, bulge to something a little more solemn and thoughtful than when hed gotten out of the shower. My observations didnt go into his head, though. I could only judge by outside signs. His reason for getting up glowering out to be a trip to his brothers house. Like always, the older Mortensens home was chaotic, with small adorable blond girls running around, many of them shriek ing when they saw their favorite uncle. Hed barely stepped inside when Andrea, his sister-in-law, came out to greet him. She wore a make jacket with her jeans and T-shirt, her blond hair slicked back into a neat ponytail. She gave Seth a startled look. You didnt bring your laptop? Andrea was as cheerful as always but appeared tired. He gestured over to where his twin nieces, McKenna and Morgan, were playing tug of war with a string of Christmas lights. It was odd because Christmas was over a month away(predicate) and also because the lights were plugged in, which collectmed like some sort of electrical risk to me. Apparently Seth felt the same way because he hastily intercepted them and aloof the string of lights altogether, amid much protest.I dont think Ill get much work done with these guys, he state dryly.Yeah, she admitted. I can go steady that. She glanced at her watch. Okay, gotta go. I dont know how long thisll take.No problem, he said. Do what you need to.She scurried ou t the door. I wanted to ask where she was off to but had no means. Again, I was reminded how out of the loop I was from the Mortensen knowledge base now. Once I would have known every detail.Kendall, a precocious nine-year-old, solemnly walked up to Seth. Uncle Seth, she said, will you play bestow with me?Seth arched an eyebrow. Loan? Whats that? Its where Im the mortgage broker, and you come to get a loan for a house but dont have the money for a down payment. She paused. Well have to make a pretend income fax for you.Tax, he corrected. And how about we go to the bookstore instead? She frowned. I want to play Loan. They have real estate books there, he said. I dont think we can play Loan without sufficient background.Okay, she conceded. We can go.Brandy strolled into the living room just then with her four-year-old sister in her arms. Kayla looked like shed woken up from a nap and sleepily had her head against Brandys shoulder. I loved all the girls, but something about Kayla always affected me more strongly.Go where? asked Brandy, shifting Kaylas weight. Although she held her sister tenderly, Brandy had a dark cloud around her.To Emerald City.Brandy sighed. Dont you spend enough time there?Maddie got a few pairs of shoes for the dress and ask you to try them on.Brandy gave him a look that exquisitely expressed all of her feelings on that topic.Dont start, he warned, in as chastising a tone as Id ever comprehend him use. Welcome to adolescence, Seth.Is Georgina working? she asked.Kendall looked up from where shed been starting to color. In orange crayon, a blank piece of paper read IRS.Yeah, can we see Georgina? Kendall piped in.Seth looked pained. I dont know if shes there or not.I didnt know either. I didnt know if this was a true or false dream. It felt true so far, but I didnt trust the Oneroi. Being an observer, I had to think I wouldnt be there. Certainly I wouldnt if this were true. I wondered what would happen at the store when I suddenly stopped sho wing up.I can just stay here while youre gone, Brandy said. Mom doesnt mind if Im alone. Then you cant try on the shoes. Which defeats the whole purpose. After a carefully worded discussion, in which Brandy suggested he just bring the shoes to her, she finally conceded. With the whole gang along, they had to take the Mortensen van, which Seth didnt seem overly stir about. But there was no other way to transport five girls, one of whom needed a car buttocks. The troop arrived at Emerald City. Seth left the four younger ones in the kids section, which was a wonderland of picture books, puzzles, and stuffed animals. Janice was working that area today and told him shed keep an eye on the girls. Seth also put Kendall in charge of her sisters, with the bribe that hed buy her some finance books. That left him and Brandy to find Maddie, who was holed up in an office. Her face lit up when she saw them, and she practically flew from her seat to give him a quick kiss. Brandy scowled, and a troub led feeling burned within me. The love on Maddies face was so obvious, so stronganyone could see it. She made no attempts to hide it, even at work. I hated their relationship, but how could I resent her feelings? How could I resent her loving the man who meant the realism to me?Hows work? he asked her, smiling fondly. Was that his way of showing love too? How had he looked around me? For some reason, I was certain hed been differenthadnt he? I couldnt remember.Maddie gestured to the desk she shared with Doug. A little crazy. Yet strangely boring. Im stuck on paperwork all day. Performance reviews.Hey, Im stuck on paperwork every day.She rolled her eyes. Bad joke. And not the same at all.Try putting some sex and violence into the reviews, and they might go faster.I was too disturbed by their banter to pay much attention to the fact that Maddie was doing my job. Brandy looked equally pained by the conversation. As Maddie and Seth spoke, I studied him further, nerve-racking to read his feelings. Yes, there was affectionyet, it reminded me a little of the warm indulgence he showed his nieces. At last, Maddie produced a shopping bag full of shoes. Brandys dress was hanging in the office, and Maddie ordered Seth to leave while his niece changed. near before he was shooed out, Maddie remarked to Brandy, Im glad this color looks good on you. I decided to do everything purple because of how great it looked on Georgina. I found some awesome flowers that go with it all too.Oh, fucking fantastic. I had influenced the color scheme for their wedding. Seth left, and I went with him. He wandered through the store, browsing through books an activity he never tired of. Several employees said hello to him as they passed by.Including me.Seeing as the Oneroi had put me in dreams a couple times now, I shouldnt have been surprised. Except, whenever I was a character in the theatre of these dreams, Id always had awareness of it. Id watched me and felt me. Now, I saw myself approac h Seth exactly the same way Id seen Maddie and Brandy approach him. I was still objective. No inner connection. Again, just like watching a movie. I didnt entirely understand it, but nothing the Oneroi did should really shock me anymore.Hey, I (she?) said, shelving a couple books. They were copies of The Scarlet Letter, and Id set them in new releases.Hey, said Seth, a weird mix of shyness and familiarity in his manner. Hows it going? Not bad, I said. Quiet day. Mostly just putting away books.Youve got Maddie doing reviews.Yeah, well, I thought she could handle it. Besides, this dress is new. Itd be a shame to keep it hidden. My watching self had already noticed the dress because that was second nature to me. It was a great dress but not necessarily one to wear to work. It was a silk sheath that stopped high on the thigh, with straps tying around the neck and a scoop neckline that showed a considerable amount of cleavage. There was no bra anywhere. I looked like I should have been clu bbing, not shelving. Seeing as this whole vision was no memory of mine, the dress only furthered the fact that this was one of the lies. I wasnt afraid to tart it up, but even I had boundaries at work.Seth seemed surprised at the dress but not unappreciative. You should be hand-selling, he said. Go outside with a book, and I bet you could push it on anyone. This dress might not work on everyone, I pointed out.He gave me one of those little smiles of his, and I wondered if the other Georgina melted like I did. The dress is only half of it. Youre charming enough to talk anyone into anything.I gave him a smile in return, one that was both cheery and sly. Anything? The innuendo didnt progress because Kayla suddenly pranced over and wrapped her arms around Seths legs. He scooped her up and glanced around. What happened to Kendall? No finance books for bad babysitters. My alter ego peered over toward the magazines. Is that her? I sounded uncertain, which was odd because when Seth turned to s ee, it was perfectly obvious it was Kendall. She was reading Forbes.Seth sighed and called her over. She brightened when she saw me. Hi, Georgina Youre so pretty today. Thanks, I said, beaming. You were supposed to be in charge, said Seth. Go get the twins. Hopefully they havent wandered out into traffic.Kendall shook her head. Theyre playing with puzzles. But she raced off nonetheless.Kayla was consummate(a) around the store in that distracted way children her age had, watching the people and sights. Seth gave her a slight nudge. What about you? Arent you going to say hi to Georgina?Kayla glanced in the direction he indicated, looked me over, and then continued her survey of the store. It wasnt so much she shunned me or was repulsed by me it was more like she was disinterested. I didnt stand out to her more than any other patron or even one of the shelves. One of her moods, said Seth apologetically.Brandy surfaced, still annoyed by the shoes, but immensely happy to see me. The rest o f the girls were rustled up, and after a bit more chatting, Seth and the nieces left me to my bad shelving. Hed continued holding Kayla in his arms, and she suddenly turned to him in all seriousness. When are you going to find Georgina? she asked. Her voice was small and sweet. She rarely spoke, so I always loved the sound of it when she did.He frowned, trying to open the van door with one hand. Brandy helped him. We just saw Georgina, he said. Inside. No, we didnt, said Kayla. We did. You snubbed her, he teased. I told you to say hello. That wasnt Georgina. You have to find her. What have you been dope? Brandy asked, taking over to buckle Kayla into her booster. That was Georgina.Seth sighed. Be careful with your choice of expressions. The topic dropped after that, but as they drove back to Terry and Andreas, a chill ran through me. Kayla knew. Kayla knew I was gone. This must be a true dream after all. Wed learned recently that she had the faintest stirring of psychic powers and the ab ility to see some things on the supernatural plane. She had a vague sense of my aura, and shed realized that it wasnt me in the store. Thats why shed been so disinterested. It was also why I hadnt been inside that Georgina. It wasnt Georgina. Then who was it?With a sinking feeling, I immediately answered my own question. Who else would have an interest in looking like me and flirting with Seth?Simone. Simone was impersonating me in my absence, I was certain of it. Son of a bitch. I couldnt feel her aura in this dream form, and no earthborn could, period. Except for Kayla. Fuck. This was not what I needed. The rest of Seths day was uneventful, though he thankfully never ran into me again. Andrea returned, and it was then I learned shed been at a doctors appointment. She thanked Seth for his help, though it took a long time for him to leave, due to all the younger girls good-byes.Seth finally returned to his condo and spent the day writing, which was boring for me to watch. I didnt ge t why the Oneroi hadnt pulled me out yet. Sure, it had been disheartening to see that no mortal knew I was gone, but this dream hadnt had the devastating effects of the others.Evening fell, and Maddie returned home. Seth, engrossed in his work, stayed at his desk until she found him and spun his chair around. She climbed onto his lap, wrapping her legs around him in a way very uniform to what I used to do.He smiled at her, wrapping his arms around her as well and returning her hello kiss. How was your paperwork? he asked.Maddie ran her fingers along the side of his face, that love radiating off of her. Nonstop. Georgina left it all on me today. I dont know what was up with that. She said she thought you could handle it.Maddie pulled a face. More like she wanted to take the day off and prance around. Did you see that dress she was wearing? I mean, yeah, she can pull off anything she wants to wear, but that wasnt really work appropriate. He laughed and pulled her closer. I think Georgin a thinks her wit and charm can let her get away with anything she wants.Yeah, well, shes not as funny as she always thinks she is, grumbled Maddie. And all she got away with today was looking like she was trying to pick up some guy at the store.Wouldnt be the first time, said Seth with a shrug. What? You didnt know? She sleeps with Warren all the time. Usually in his office.I couldnt believe what I was hearing. Not only were the two of them mocking me, Seth had also told Maddie about my on-again off-again affair with the stores owner Warren. Doug had always had his suspicions, but other than Seth, no one else knew. I had never expected Seth to betray that secret.I had no idea, said Maddie. And yetI dont know. Maybe I did. I mean, everything she wears is kind of slutty. She sleeps around a lot. Shell pretty much go home with anyone. He paused. She even tried it with me once.Really? Maddies eyes went wide. Whatd you do?Nothing. I have no interest in that. I couldnt handle being with some one so easy. Shed probably sleep with all my friends while we were dating. He cupped Maddies face in his hands. Not that it matters. I have no reason to even go looking, not when I have the best thing right here.He drew her to him, and they kissed again. It wasnt the earlier hello kiss either. It was deep and ardent, both of them eagerly trying to get as much of the other as they could. His hands gripped hold of the bottom of her tank top and jerked it over her head, revealing a black satin bra I was pretty sure Id helped her pick out. Never breaking the kiss, his hands then went around her waist as he half-carried, half-stumbled out of the office and into the bedroom. They fell onto the covers, hands moving all over each others bodies and kisses starting to spread beyond lips. No, I thought, unsure if the Oneroi could hear me or not. No. I dont want to see this. Take me back. Take me back to the box. Send me to another dream. But if they were there, they werent listening. I had no ey es to close. I couldnt look away. There was no way to unsee what I was seeing. Id experienced a lot of heart-wrenching things in my relationship with Seth, things that had hurt me so badly that I swore I wanted to die. But nothing, nothing could have watchful me for seeing him have sex with another woman. And it wasnt just watching the act itself, the way their naked bodies intertwined with one another and the cries of pleasure elicited in the tiptop of orgasm. It was the look on his face as he did it. There it was. The love Id been searching for earlier. Id thought before he only regarded her with a strong affection, similar to the fond love he had for his nieces. No. This was passion I saw on his face, the kind of love that burned so deeply, it connected two peoples souls. He was looking at her the way hed once looked at me.I had never thought it was possible. Somewhere, somehow, Id been convinced that he loved her in a different way from me. Maybe their love was strong, but Id fel t certain it could never match what he felt for me. Ours was different. Yet, seeing them now, I saw that wasnt true. And when, at the end, he told her she was his world just as hed once told me I knew that I really was nothing special. The love he had for me was gone. And in the terrible, excruciating pain of that moment, I no longer wanted to die. There was no point because I was certain just then that I had died because surely, surely, Hell couldnt be worse than this.

Culture And Socialization

Socialization can be defined as the operation by which people learn to become members of a society (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 58). Thus, the kindisation process of an individual starts from endure and continues without life. The period of socializing helps an individual to develop feelings, perceptions, learn the basics of social interaction and in any case learn to recognize and respond soci in ally to parents and other important people in their lives (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 58).According to Tepperman and Curtis (2011), Socialization is accomplished by many different variables including ethnicality, family structure, gender, environment and birth order (p. 58). Socialization perpetuates culture so therefore individuals are affected by socialization and culture in one way or the other. By definition, culture is a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group (MacNeill, 2012). It is the key to understan ding how we relate to each other. There are different types of culture around the world, for example, American culture, Chinese culture, and African culture. Tepperman and Curtis (2011) noted that Culture is different between places and at different times (p. 32). Culture consists of a set of principles and traditions which is passed on from one genesis to other. Socialization teaches cultural values and norms which provides the guidelines for our everyday life. It is therefore inevitable that socialization influences what we do as humans. This paper will argue that the effects of the principal operators of socialization have led to the continuity of culture. This paper will then discuss some of the attributes of the cultural realms that are connected with the process of socialization. Finally, the essay will close down with a discussion on the effects of socialization outcomes. The process of socialization starts within the context of the family. The family is considered to be t he most impressive agent of socialization because it provides the context in which the first and most long-lasting intimate social relationships are formed.Tepperman and Curtis (2011), explains that In families, children learn how to relate to other people, express intimacy, and resolve conflict (p. 62). In order to accomplish this, parents internalize social norms and values in their children to behave in socially inhibit ways (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 62). Furthermore, the family is the childs window to the world. A childs experience of the world would be framed by his or her familys social class, religion, ethnicity and so on (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 62).That is to say, a child who does not start the process of socialization within the family context is likely to lack a sense of self-control and other basic social skills which are puff up-educated from the family. In addition, the family plays a primarily important role in shaping the childs attitude and behaviour. Te pperman and Curtis (2011), noted that Successful socialization of children involves not single bringing about their outward conformity to enatic directives, but also enabling them to become self-regulating, and motivating them so that they become willing to cooperate with parental socialization (p.62).The social interaction that takes place within the family contest is a major contributory factor to the continuity of culture. The big money media is another principal agent which has been accorded a place of importance in the explanation of socialization. The mass media constitute a key realm of cultural production and distribution. The mass media including magazines, internet, newspapers, radio, television and all means of communication which are directed towards a vast audience in society are deemed to be influential agents of socialization.According to Tepperman and Curtis (2011), the media are Instrumental in transmitting and reinforcing certain values, social behaviors, and d efinitions of social reality (p. 64). The media also contribute to racial and sexual stereotypes stereotyped portrayal of men and women, racial or ethnic minorities, homosexual men or women, older people, or those with varying abilities shape viewer understanding and socializations (Tepperman $ Curtis, 2011, p. 64). Thus, the mass media is assumed to be significant, with powerful, long lasting consequences. straight off there are more televisions and fewer people per household. In other words, more people are watching television alone (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p68). Children spend a prominent deal of time surfing the internet and watching television. Most of the time, these children are unattended or unsupervised because so many parents are in the restriction force spending long hours to provide for their families. As a result of the increasing use of the internet and other sources of entertainment or discipline such as television, children are more liable to imitate what they s ee on the television or the internet. There has been a long standing concern thatfocuses on force and pornography in digital media 20 years ago it was televisions particularly music videos but movies, comics and magazines have all been considered potentially dangerous sources of influence, especially for unripened people (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p65).The mass media is a central cultural concern because of the nature of the content that it brings to the vast majority of people (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 45). Through the production and the distribution of information to a wider audience, the mass media serves as a means by which cultural and social continuity is attained. As children move through childhood, there are many environmental influences on their socialization to adult roles. Children gradually move beyond their experience of the family as they become involved in groups in the neighborhood, other families, peers, play groups and so on (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 64). Peer groups have gained increasing recognition as an important socializing agent for children (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 68). The peer group usually involves children within a given(p) peer group are the same age and come from the same social status.According to Tepperman and Curtis (2011), playgroup provides Important opportunities for children to learn to relate to others and increase their social skill (p. 68). This is achieved by children interacting with their peers in playgroups to develop a frame of reference not based on adult authority (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 68). This is the time children are able to learn among their peers and assist independently without supervision from an adult. The peer group exerts great influence especially in the adolescence. Tepperman and Curtis (2011) depicts adolescent as a period of testing limits (p.68).In 2008, Sara, Shmuel and Zinaida concluded that Adolescents pick out alternative and independent ways, especially with peers, ov er activities that are organized for them by adults (p. 373) The school is an important institution which provides an environment for the transmission of social values through teaching and learning. Tepperman and Curtis (2011), argues that the School is probably the most important locus of childhood and adolescent socialization because it is central to a young persons social life and acts as a filter for future occupation choice (p. 70).In school, children learn discipline, social interaction and other basic skills that are deemed to be appropriate by society. The school also provides a platform for children to mingle, play and interact with peers. Through this, they learn to understand themselves and others. Sara et al. (2008) concluded that the school enables them to socialize outside the family, to return independence from adults, to practice the skills required for entering conventional adult roles, to develop their future adult identities, to express their own interests, and t o build their own cultures with their peer groups (p.373).In the process of socialization, beliefs and values are passed on to children through language practices. Communication is the sharing of meaning by which the thoughts of one person are made understandable to another (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 44). Tepperman and Curtis (2011), defines language as a System of words both written and spoken for the purpose of communication (p. 44). Socialization is realized to a great design through the use of language, the primary symbolic medium through which cultural knowledge is communicated and instantiated, reproduced and transformed.During this process, individuals learn the language of the culture they are born into as well as the roles to play in life. In addition, the mass media is also one of the most important attributes of the cultural realms that play a variety of social roles in the socialization process. Through distribution and production, the mass media transmit messages to a mass audience. They are the means by which we find out about important political, economic, and social happenings. We rely on them for the information we need to understand our local, regional, national, and global contexts (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 46). Through the mass media, individuals can learn the cultural practices of other countries or culture. For example, through the mass media, people can watch the Chinese New Year celebrations without going to China, the Caribbean Calypso Carnival without going to Jamaica or the Olympics games without visiting the host nation. The principal agents of socialization are the most important contributory factors to ensuring the continuity of cultural attainment. The family, mass media, school and the peer group have been accorded a place of importance in the explanation of socialization. It is important to note, however, that there are also certain attributes of the cultural realm that are connected with the process of socialization. The se attributes of the cultural realm includes language, mass media and so on. Thus, there is a circular relationship between culture and socialization.

The Return: Shadow Souls Chapter 34

I dont think around those things, Elena answered in the same modal value Damon had spoken and for the same reason. I dont think because if I do Ill go insane. But if I go insane, what good will I be to Stefan? I couldnt help him. Instead I block it every out with walls of iron and I keep it out-of-door at either cost. And you can manage that? Damon asked, his vocalize shaking slightly.I can because I have to. Remember in the beginning when we were arguing about the ropes around our wrists? Meredith and fair had doubts. But they knew that I would weaken handcuffs and crawl after you if that was what it took. Elena turned to look for at Damon in the crimson darkness and added, And youve given yourself outside, time after time, you k straight off. She slipped arms around him to spotlight his healed stand, so that he would have no doubt about what she meant. That was for you, Damon said harshly. Not really, Elena replied. Think about it. If you hadnt agreed to the Discipline, we might have chip off out of town, but we could neer have helped Stefan after that. When you get down to it, boththing, all youve done, youve done for Stefan. When you get down to it, I was the one who put Stefan here(predicate) in the first place, Damon said tiredly. I figure were average about even now.How many times, Damon? You were possessed when you let Shinichi talk you into it, Elena said, feeling exhausted herself. peradventure you need to be possessed again average a puny so you remember how it feels.Every cell in Damons body take careed to flinch away from this idea. But aloud he just said, Theres something that everyone has missed, you know. About the archetypal story of how deuce brothers killed separately other simultaneously, and became vampires because theyd dallied with the same girl. What? Elena said sharply, shocked out of her tiredness. Damon, what do you mean? What I said. Theres something youve all missed. Ha. Maybe even Stefan has missed it. The story ge ts told and retold, but nobody catches it.Damon had turned his face away. Elena moved closer to him, just a bit, so he could smell her perfume, which was attar of roses that night. Damon, tell me. Tell me, pleaseDamon started to turn toward her And it was at that issue that the liftmen itemped. Elena had only a second to wipe her face, and the curtains were existence drawn.Meredith had told them all the myth about Bloddeuwedd, which shed got from a story-telling globe. All about how Bloddeuwedd had been do out of flowers and brought to life by the gods, and how she had betrayed her husband to his death, and how, in punishment, she had been doomed to spend each night from midnight to dawn as an owl. And, apparently, there was something the myths didnt mention. The fact that she had been doomed to live here, banished from the Celestial Court into the deep red twilight of the Dark Dimension. All things considered, it was luculent that her parties started at six in the evening.Elena found that her mind was jumping from subject to subject. She accepted a goblet of Black Magic from a slave as her eyes wandered.Every woman and most of the men at the party were wearing clever attire that changed color in the sun. Elena felt quite pocket-sized after all, everything out of doors seemed to be pink or scarlet or wine-colored. Downing her goblet of Magic, Elena was slightly surprised to find herself going into automatic party-mode behavior, greet people shed met earlier in the week with cheek kisses and hugs as if shed known them for years. Meanwhile she and Damon worked their way toward the mansion, sometimes with, sometimes against the tide of constantly moving people. They make it up one steep set of white (pink) marble stairs, which sported on either side banks of glorious blue (violet) delphiniums and pink (scarlet) wild roses. Elena stopped here, for two reasons. One was to get a new goblet of Black Magic. The first had already given her a pleasant glow althou gh of course everything was constantly enthusiastic here. She was hoping that the second cup would help her forget everything that Damon had brought up in the litter except the key and help her remember what shed been fretting over originally, before her thoughts had been hijacked by Bonnie and Merediths talk.I expect the best way is just to ask someone, she told Damon, who was suddenly and silently at her elbow.Ask what?Elena leaned a little toward the slave whod just supplied her with a fresh goblet. May I ask where is Lady Bloddeuwedds important ballroom? The liveried slave looked surprised. Then, with his head, he made a gesture all around. This middle below the canopy has gained the name the Great trip the light fantastic hall, he said, bowing over his tray.Elena stared at him. Then she stared around her.Under a giant canopy it looked long-term to her and was hung all around with pretty lanterns in shades that were enhanced by the sun the smooth grass lawn stretched away for hundreds of yards on all sides. It is bigger than a football field. What Id like to know, Bonnie was a peel offg a fellow lymph gland, a woman who had clearly been to many of Bloddeuwedds affairs and knew her way around the mansion, is this which room is the main ballroom?Oh, my deah, it depends on what you mean, the guest replied cheerfully. Theahs the Great Ballroom out of doors you must have seen it while climbing the big pavilion? And then theahs the White Ballroom inside. Thats lit with candelabras and has the curtains drawn all round. Sometimes its called the trip the light fantastic toe Room, since all that is played in there is waltzes. But Bonnie was still caught in horror a few sentences back. Theres a ballroom outside? she said shakily, hoping that somehow she hadnt heard right.Thats it, deah, you can see through and through that wall theah. The woman was telling the truth. You could see through the wall, because the walls were all of glass, one beyond a nonher , allowing Bonnie to see what seemed to be an illusion done with mirrors lighted room after lighted room, all filled with people. lone(prenominal) the last room on the bottom floor seemed to be made out of something solid. That must be the White Ballroom. But through the opposite wall, where the guest was pointing oh, yes. There was a canopy top. She remembered vaguely passing it. The other thing she remembered wasThey dance on the grass? That enormous field of grass?Of course. Its all specially cut and rolled smooth. You wont trip over a weed or hummock of ground. Are you sure youre feeling quite well? You look rathah pale. sanitary the guest laughed as pale as anyone can look in this light.Im fine, Bonnie said dazedly. Im justfine. The two parties met later and told each other of the horrors that they had unearthed. Damon and Elena had detect that the ground of the outdoor ballroom was nigh as hard as oscillate anything that had been buried there before the ground was rol led smooth by heavy rollers would now be packed down in something like cement. The only place that anyone could dig there was around the perimeter. We should have brought a diviner, Damon said. You know, someone who uses a forked stick or a pendulum or a bit of a missing persons clothing to home in on the set up area.Youre right, Meredith said, her tone clearly adding for once. Why didnt we bring a diviner?Because I dont know of any, Damon said, with his sweetest, most ferocious barracuda smile.Bonnie and Meredith had found that the inside ballrooms flooring was rock very beautiful white marble. There were dozens of floral arrangements in the room, but all that Bonnie had stuck her small hand into (as unobtrusively as possible) were entirely cut flowers in a vase of water. No soil, nothing that could justify using the term buried in.And besides, why would Shinichi and Misao put the key in water they knew would be thrown out in a few days? Bonnie asked, frowning, while Meredith add ed,And how do you find a loose floorboard in marble? So we cant see how it could be buried there. By the way, I checked and the White Ballroom has been here for years, so theres no chance that they dumped it under the building stones, either.Elena, by now drinking her third goblet of Black Magic, said, All right. The way we look at this is one room scratched off the list. Now, weve already got half(prenominal) of the key look how easy that was Maybe that was just to tease us, Damon said, raising an eyebrow. We will find it.All right, Damon said, suddenly deadly serious. If we have to pretend to be mental faculty and use pickaxes on that soil outdoors, well do it. But first, lets go through the entire house inside. That seemed to work well last time. All right, Meredith said, for once facia l expression straight at him and without disapproval. Bonnie and I will take the upstairs floors and you can take the downstairs ones maybe you can make something of that White Waltz Ballroom. All right. They set to work. Elena wished that she could calm down. condescension most of three goblets of Black Magic oscillating inside her or perhaps because of them she was seeing certain things in new lights. But she must keep her mind on the quest and only on the quest. She would do anything anything she told herself, to get the key. Anything for Stefan. The White Ballroom smelled of flowers and was garlanded with large, opulent blooms in the midst of abundant greensery. Standing arrangements were placed to shield an area around a fountain into an intimate nook where couples could sit. And, although there was no visible orchestra, melody poured into the ballroom, demanding a response from Elenas susceptible body.I dont suppose you know how to waltz, Damon said suddenly, and Elena r ealized that she had been swaying in time to the beat, eyes closed.Of course I do, Elena answered, a little offended. We all of us went to Ms. Hopewells classes. That was the equivalent of charm rail in Fells Church, she added, seeing the funny side of it and laughing at herself. But Ms. Hopewell did love to dance, and she taught us every dance and movement she thought was graceful. That was when I was about eleven.I suppose it would be absurd for me to ask you to dance with me, Damon said. Elena looked at him with what she knew were large and puzzled eyes. Despite the low-cut scarlet trim, she didnt feel like an irresistible siren tonight. She was too wrought up to feel the magic woven in the cloth, magic which she now realized was telling her she was a dancing flame, a fire elemental. She supposed that Meredith must feel like a quiet stream, flowing swiftly and steadily to her destination, but sparkling and glinting all the way. And Bonnie Bonnie, of course was a sprite of the air, meant to dance as lightly as a feather in that opalescent dress, barely subject to gravity. But abruptly Elena remembered certain glances of admiration she had seen directed toward herself. And now suddenly Damon was vulnerable? Yet he didnt imagine she would dance with him?Of course I would love to dance, she said, realizing with a slight shock that she hadnt noticed before, that Damon was in flawless white tie. Of course, it was on the one night when it might immobilise them, but it made him look like a prince of the blood. Her lips quirked slightly at the title. Of the bloodoh, yes.Are you sure you know how to waltz? she asked him.A good question. I took it up in 1885 because it was known to be riotous and indecent. But it depends on whether you are speaking of the peasant waltz, the Viennese Waltz, the Hesitation Waltz, or Oh, come on, or well miss another dance. Elena grabbed his hand, feeling tiny sparks as if shed stroked a cats fur the wrong way, and pulled him into th e swaying crowd.Another waltz began. Music flooded into the room and lifted Elena almost off her feet as the small hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Her body tingled all over as if she had drunk some sort of celestial elixir. It was her ducky waltz since childhood the one shed been brought up on. Tchaichovskys Sleeping Beauty waltz. But some child part of her mind could never help but trade union the sweet sweeping notes that came after the thundering, electrifying beginning unneurotic with the words from the Disney movie versionI know you I danced with you once upon a fancy. As always, they brought tears to her eyes they made her heart sing and her feet want to fly rather than dance. Her dress was backless. Damons warm hand was on her bare skin there.I know, something whispered to her, why they called this dance riotous and indecent. And now, certainly, Elena felt like a flame. We were meant to be this way. She couldnt remember if it was an old quote of Damons or something ne w he was just barely whispering to her mind now. Like two flames that join and merge into one.Youre good, Damon told her, and this time she knew that it was him speaking and that it was in the present. You dont need to patronize me. Im too blissful already Elena laughed back. Damon was an expert, and not just at the precision of the steps. He danced the waltz as if it were still riotous and indecent. He had a firm lead, which of course Elenas humans strength could not break. But he could interpret little signals of her own, about what she wanted and he obliged her, as if they were ice dancing, as if at any moment they might twirl and leap.Elenas stomach was slowly melting and taking her other internal organs with it.And it never once occurred to her to think what her high school friends and rivals and enemies would have thought of her melting over classical music. She was free of petty spite, petty shame over differences. She was through with labeling. She wished that she could go back to show everyone that shed never meant it in the first place. The waltz was over all too soon and Elena wanted to push the Replay button and do it from the beginning again. There was a moment just when the music stopped where she and Damon were looking at each other, with equal exaltation and yearning and And then Damon bowed over her hand. There is to a greater extent to the waltz than just moving your feet, he said, not looking up at her. There is a swaying grace that can be put into the movements, a leaping flame of joy and oneness with the music, with a partner. Those are not matters of expertise. Thank you very much for giving me the pleasure.Elena laughed because she wanted to cry. She never wanted to stop dancing. She wanted to tango with Damon a real tango, the kind you were supposed to have to get married after. But there was another missiona demand mission that had to be completed. And, as she turned, there were a whole crowd of other things in front of her. Men, dem ons, vampires, beastlike creatures. All of them wanted a dance. Damons tuxedoed back was walking away from her.DamonHe paused but did not turn back. Yes?Help me We need to find the other half of the keyIt seemed to take him a moment to assess the situation, but then he understood. He came back to her, and taking her by the hand said in a clear, ringing voice, This girl is my individual(prenominal) assistant. I do not desire that she dance with anyone other than myself. There was a restless murmuring at this. The kind of slaves that got taken to balls of this sort were not usually the kind that were forbidden to interact with strangers. But just then there was a sort of flurry at the side of the room, eventually pressure level toward the opposite side where Damon and Elena were. What is it? Elena asked, the dance and the key both forgotten.Who is it, Id ask, rather, Damon replied. And Id answer our hostess, Lady Bloddeuwedd herself.Elena found herself crowding behind other people to g et a glimpse of this most extraordinary creature. But when she actually saw the girl standing alone in the doorway to the ballroom, she gasped. She was made out of flowers Elena remembered. What would a girl made out of flowers look like? She would have skin like the faintest blush of pink on an apple blossom, Elena thought, staring unashamedly. Her cheeks would be slightly deeper pink, like a dawn-colored rose. Her eyes, enormous in her delicate, perfect face, would be the color of larkspur, with heavy feathery black lashes that would make them droop half-shut, as if she walked always half in a dream. And she would have yellow hair as pale as primroses, falling down almost to the floor, wound in braids that were themselves incorporated into thicker braids until the whole mass was brought together just above her delicate ankles. Her lips would be as red as poppies, half-open and inviting. And she would give off a scent that was like a bouquet of all the first blossoms of spring. She wo uld walk as if swaying in the breeze.Elena could only remember standing, gazing after this vision like the dozens of other guests around her. Just one much than second to drink in such loveliness, her mind begged. But what was she wearing? Elena heard herself say aloud. She could not remember either a stunning dress or a glimpse of lustrous apple-blossom skin through the many braids. Some sort of gown. It was made out of what else? Flowers, Damon put in wryly. She was wearing a dress made of every kind of flower Ive ever seen. I dont understand how they stayed put maybe they were silk and sewn together. He was the only one who didnt seem dazzled by this vision.I wonder if she would talk to us just a few words, Elena said. She was longing to hear the delicate, magical girls voice.I doubt it, a man in the crowd answered her. She doesnt talk much at least until midnight. Say Its you Howre you feeling?Very well, thank you, Elena replied politely, and then quickly stepped back. She re cognized the speaker system as one of the young men who had forced their cards on Damon at the end of the Godfathers ceremony, the night of her Discipline. Now she just wanted to get away unobtrusively. But there were too many of the men, and it was clear that they were not about to let her and Damon go.This is the girl I told you about. She goes into a trance and no matter how shes attach she doesnt feel a thing blood running down her sides like water and she never flinched Theyre a professional act. They go on the road.Elena was just about to say, coolly, that Bloddeuwedd had strictly forbidden this kind of barbarism at her party, when she heard one of the young vampires saying, Dont you know, I was the one who persuaded Lady Bloddeuwedd to ask you to this get-together. I told her about your act and she was most interested to see it.Well, scratch one excuse, Elena thought. But at least be nice to these young men. They might be facilitative somehow later.Im afraid I cant do i t tonight, she said, quietly, so that they would be quiet themselves. Ill apologize to Lady Bloddeuwedd directly, of course. But it just isnt possible.Yes, it is. Damons voice, just behind her, astounded her. Its quite possible given that someone finds my amulet.Damon What are you saying?Hush What I have to.Unfortunately, about three and a half weeks ago I wooly a very important amulet. It looks like this. He brought out the half of the fox key and let them all take a good look at it.Is that what you used to do the trick? someone asked, but Damon was far too clever for that. No, many people saw me do the act just a week or so ago without it. This is a personal amulet, but with part of it missing, I simply dont feel like doing magic. It looks like a little fox. Youre not a kitsune? someone too clever for their own good, Elena thought asked next.It may look like that to you. Its actually an arrow. An arrow with two green stones at the arrowhead. Its a masculine charm.A female voice somewhere in the crowd said I shouldnt think you need any more masculine charm than you have right now and there was laughter.
